September 5 2018 - Whangarei South Road Intersection Upgrades: What's Happening

I have had a lot of people ask me what is happening with roading upgrades in the Whangarei South area. Given this I thought I would put together this leaflet to help shed some light on the proposed plans.
I hope this helps bring some clarity.

Yours sincerely, Cr Vince Cocurullo

SH1/Tarewa Road Intersection
Estimated Project Cost - $17 million
Construction Finish Date - 2020

Approved Solution

The following improvements are planned:

• Traffic lights at the intersection to make it safer to turn right into Tarewa Road and to improve safety for all road users.

• Double lanes for north and southbound traffic (including replacing the existing bridge), installation of new free left turns on/off SH1 and banning the right turn out of Tarewa Road, to offset any delay due to the new traffic lights.

• A shared path under the new bridge and signalised pedestrian crossings to improve safety for those walking and biking.

These improvements will make it safer for all road users along the state highway and into Whāngārei including pedestrians and cyclists, as well as improving traffic flow.

Porowini Ave Upgrades

Whāngārei District Council plans to upgrade the following two intersections – Tarewa Road/Porowini Avenue and Maunu Road/Porowini Avenue. These works will start and finish during the construction period of the SH1/ Tarewa Road intersection.
As you can see this construction work has been planned to happen at the same time and may cause some disruption. NZTA and the Whāngārei District Council will work closely together to minimise the impact on traffic flows during this construction time. Any queries contact the Council on 09 430 4200.
